New water sources for a climate-resilient drinking water supply

Climate change is putting increasing pressure on the availability of our current drinking water sources. Developing new and sustainable sources of drinking water for households and industry is essential for strengthening our climate resilience. NEW WATER is taking on this challenge. Partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Germany are joining forces to unlock three alternative water sources: wastewater, rainwater, and polluted surface water.
Within the project, the first steps are being implemented and tested at seven pilot locations in order to investigate both central and decentralised drinking water production from alternative water sources. Two of the locations are in Flanders.
- Tienen Suikerraffinaderij, where wastewater from sugar beet processing is being investigated as a potential drinking water source.
- Verenigde Kompostbedrijven (VERKO), where digestate from a composting plant is being studied.
